Mugs & Jugs
By Sue Sawyer
Mugs & Jugs in Puyallup, across from the downtown Fred Meyer, has re-opened under new ownership, a new attitude, new paint job, new electronic toys, new pool table and decorated to look like an upscale sportsbar.
Mike's Karaoke is Sunday, Monday, Wednesday and Thursday nights. Monday features $1.00 pounders for the ladies and on Tuesdays the pub will host live blues bands. Thursdays will be set aside as "karaoke contest" night. Come out and dance to top 40 jams every Friday and Saturday. After all, the tagline for Mugs & Jugs is: "Puyallup's Best Meeting Place - Just Too Much Fun."
Famous Alaskan restaurant hospitality is behind it all. Dawn, from the 50th state and her dad, who oversees the kitchen, want to bring Mugs & Jugs back to its glory days. Josh, Dawn's fiance is the new manager and brings experience from his Tribe's, Emerald Queen food and hospitality services, to the Puyallup show place. The karaoke stage received new lighting, new Mackie powered speakers and new high tech DJ equipment was purchased for Mugs & Jugs exclusively. Black lighting was installed making it easy to read the song books and CD labels (that are not black). Wear light colored clothes and you'll stand out.
The bartender has created his own vodka based "Blue Turnip" and "Cherry Popper" drinks. Everyday there is a drink special in conjunction with daily food specials. Monday you can count on eating all the shrimp you can for $7.99; Tuesdays and Thursdays you’ll get three large Tacos for $4.95; Wednesday top sirloin with all the fixin's for $7.95 and Friday fish, chips and chowder $7.99. A full menu runs until 2:00am weekends, which includes all kinds of burgers and fried foods. Attached to the building is a beer garden to drink and smoke under umbrella covered tables. Josh says priority number one is customer service, top quality food and drink. He leaves karaoke to Mike because Josh admits, he only sings in the shower.
Mike, an experienced karaoke host and a performance singer for bands in and around Seattle started the show off by making Guns & Roses proud with "Sweet Child Of Mine" and other times in the rotation with Chicago's "25" and "I Can See Why You Think You Belong To Me."
Sinta sang "Tide Is High," Grandpa Tell Me," Andy followed with "Love Her Madly," "Margaritaville," and both Andy and Sita teamed up to sing "Closer I Get To You," Pete did a fine job with "Desperado" and Jesse turned on the audience with "If Tomorrow Never Comes."
Since the karaoke show is new, there's plenty of room in the rotation and you won't be disappointed. The fog machine keeps rolling, the lighting is professionally staged, the sound is crisp and clear. Mike is known for his mixing miracles, quick moving rotations and laid-back, pleasing personality. Those fried zucchini's.....they melt in your mouth!
The karaoke show starts at 9:00pm. Try it, you'll like it and be back for more. Their address is 1015 North Meridian, Puyallup (253)-770-7579. Parking lot is in the rear of the building.
