Welcome to the Northwest Karaoke Guide

The Rose of Tralee

By Sue Sawyer

"Karaoke by SusAnn" has just moved from "Flying Boots" to The Opal Tavern on South Tacoma Way, Thursday through Saturday nights. The most recent owners of Opal have always featured karaoke as part of their nightly ritual is to join in the rotation as well as befriending the singer-customers who display their talents there. It's all part of making Opal Tavern the local, comfy place to hang out.

SusAnn adds warmth and sparkle to her karaoke show and her sound is crisp and even in conjunction with a well lighted stage, monitors, portable mics and good mixing sense. SusAnn's motto: "I like to put a smile on a face." And, that she does! Her magnetism is infectious. SusAnn used to sing at various bars around Pierce County and then was asked to substitute for various karaoke hosts. After doing that for several years, she bought her own equipment and "Karaoke By SusAnn" has been in the limelight from day one.

Since the smoking ban, Opal has added a limited, inexpensive bar-food menu plus stocking a wider assortment of beer and liquor brands. The bartender is very skilled and attentive. SusAnn's followers are, for the most part, mellow folk so it makes for a pleasant rotation and easy pace. Examples of good singing include Sam performing "Paint Me A Birmingham" and Susan (not SusAnn) walking through the bar singing "Love Can Build A Bridge." Rich followed with "The Gambler" and SusAnn put forth "Give Me One Reason" while Coyote did his signature spiritual "Just A Closer Walk With Thee." Mike's favorite song is "Diggin' Up Bones." Sam, again will always be "Rough And Ready" and Rich cannot leave the stage without doing "The Corvette Song" which the audience associates with him.

During karaoke, SusAnn welcomes musical instruments on to the stage. She has several plugs for them which interfaces with her equipment. You can also bring your musical background (sequencing) discs or your own karaoke disc to enhance your performance.

Parking is not a problem along South Tacoma Way. The street in this neighborhood is active with supper clubs, bars, night spots and it's well lit too. The Opal Tavern’s address is 5226 So. Tacoma Way, Tacoma (253-473-2600). Check out their awesome karaoke show from 9:00pm to closing, Thursday-Saturday.
