Fridays
Glynn’s Shamrock, Bellingham

Day Job: Lifestyle Consultant, Herbalist, Drug-Free Pain Mgt. Specialist
How long have you been hosting? About one year
How many places have you hosted? Eight
Why did you become a karaoke host? It doesn’t matter how well you can sing, so long as you have fun while you’re up there. I want to encourage others to feed their inner child.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? EVERYTHING. I have a very long list of songs I like to sing, spanning multiple genres – a small sampling of my personal favorites: Eurythmics, Fleetwood Mac, Tool, Pantera, Skid Row, Heart, Led Zeppelin, Ozzy, Nickelback, Squirrel Nut Zippers, Blondie, Nirvana, Pink, Dixie Chicks, Pink Floyd, Tori Amos, Queensryche, Soundgarden, Metallica, Alanis Morisette, Jimmy Eat World, Tracy Bonham, Bob Seger, and Concrete Blonde… among many others.
Type of music you enjoy listening to? EVERYTHING. Last week it was swing, this week it’s R&B. Next week it could be heavy metal or classical. See the stuff I like to sing for more examples.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? Buckethead, Les Claypool (Primus), Maynard James Keenan (Tool, A Perfect Circle, Puscifer), Dave Matthews, Tori Amos, Stevie Ray Vaughan, Sweatshop Union.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? Any of the aforementioned artists can be listed here, they are the influences in my own eclectic writing style.
Your biggest musical influence? There are way too many to name. Seriously. The partial list of artists I enjoy singing above should pretty much cover it.
Have a musical fantasy? Making an entire album with Les Claypool and Buckethead.
How did you ever hear about the Karaoke Newspaper? It has been distributed in the establishments I frequent and host at for longer than I’ve been hosting.
Play any instruments? I can skillfully hunt and peck melodies on my keyboard and my brother’s guitar, then layer them into a loop sampler to write songs. I used to play clarinet and saxophone in elementary and junior high, and in high school I picked up a flute. It’s difficult to sing and play a woodwind instrument at the same time, so I’ve fallen out of practice.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? Country, Rap, all flavors of Rock, standards, swing, just about anything goes, Unless you’re at Glynn’s, then no swearing please!
How many songs in your karaoke directory? More than 75,000
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? Heebie Jeebie, a garage band that never left the garage and Audiosnob is my current project.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? No. Some people get too competitive, spoiling much of the fun in it.
Entered any karaoke contests? Yes.
How did you do? I stepped down from the 2nd place running before the finals to become a Stallion Entertainment Host. Not too shabby, eh?
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Multiple versions of the same song, and not knowing which is edited how, or midi not-so-fabulous… also some take it WAY to seriously.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? Whether you are incredibly talented, tone deaf, or completely new to the karaoke scene, I encourage everyone to have a good time. And due to the “just about anything goes” ambiance, I tend to attract a very wide spectrum of regulars from freshly turned 21s to 80. Even the young’uns, a few of my underagers are seven, one is just two years old… so there’s an array of antics from the goofy and grumpy old men to the giggly girly girls, rocker chicks and dudes, novice singers, veteran crooners, and those crazy college kids love my show. Those college kids love to let loose. Add alcohol, a few mics, and some music to the hodge podgery of peeps and well, things get really interesting…
Why should we come to your show? I encourage fun, but you might meet some cool new friends, learn a new song, or remember one you’d lost.
Like to say anything to our readers? So long as you’re having fun, that’s all that matters.

Leo De Leon
Name: Leo De Leon
Age: 37
Company: Larry-Oke Karaoke
Email: leodaman@comcast.net
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Marital Status: Married
Show: Goldie’s Casino, Shoreline, WA • Tuesday & Thursday at 9:30pm
Day Job: Security Officer
Leo, how long have you been hosting?
As early as 1992.
How many places have you hosted?
At least eight.
Why did you become a karaoke host?
I just have the love of singing in front of many people.
What type of music do you enjoy singing?
I pretty much sing a variety of music, but I would prefer ballads.
Type of music you enjoy listening to?
Country and mostly oldies, doo-wops and blues.
Your favorite entertainers/performers?
I have a couple of local bands that I definitely love to come and see. Unfortunately the bassist for both bands had passed on, The Davanos and The N’sane.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why?
My answer is the legendary RAY CHARLES.
Your biggest musical influence?
My mother and father. They even got me to join the children’s church choir.
Have a musical fantasy?
I would like to sing a duet with Beyonce and Reba McIntyre.
Memorable stories that you’d like to share?
When I and my mother actually sang at a wedding while the couple exchanged their vows at the altar.
How did you hear about the Karaoke Newspaper?
Actually, from Joyce Bell of J&J Karaoke and Turi (also a KJ) back when we worked together.
Play any instruments?
I have a little knowledge of guitar, piano, and I also played the sousaphone (tuba) for the West Seattle High School Band.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)?
Mostly R&B and a little of country and showtunes, sometimes rock and roll.
How many songs in your karaoke directory?
It’s kinda hard to say, cause Larry of Larry-Oke-Karaoke and his lovely wife, Melanie, are the ones that actually updates the song selections. All I know is that our book is thick.
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands?
Mostly a guest singer with The Davanos and The Nsane. La Bamba is the song I sing with them.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests?
I enjoy listening to the contestants.
Entered any karaoke contests?
Never have.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike?
Pretty much, KJ’s that allow themselves to be bribed.
How would you improve the karaoke industry?
Coaching singers on the do’s and don’ts of karaoke singing, like not muffling the mic (eating it) knowing about mic control.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show?
Most of the singers are very supportive of the way I do my shows, because I try to be supportive of them by having a fair rotation, not allowing myself to be bribed by someone that wants to cut in on the rotation.
Why should we come to your show?
All I actually ask of people when they come in for my shows is that they give me the chance to show them what I am about with the shows, and then decide if I am worth seeing again.
Like to say anything to our readers?
A lot of KJ’s do not really appreciate being rushed. Listen to the KJ, most of them have been doing this line of work for a while and they do know what they are doing, If you are also KJ’s visiting another KJ’s show? Try not to be judgemental of them if they do something that you do not approve of, as it may happen to you, also. And most of all, just have fun and enjoy the show.

Rick E. Hamilton II
Name: Rick E. Hamilton II
Age: 39
Company: Stallion Entertainment
Email: bishopreh2@msn.com
Zodiac Sign: Gemini
Marital Status: Divorced
Show: Glynn’s Shamrock Pub, Bellingham; Tuesday & Saturday at 9pm
Village Inn, Bellingham; Wednesday at 9pm
Day Job: Veteran’s Relief Fund Coord.
How long have you been hosting?
7 months as a host for SingWithRocky.com, and I was recently promoted to Stallion Entertainment Regional Manager.
How many places have you hosted?
Five, including Glynn’s Shamrock Pub, Hot Shotz Martini Bar, Quarterback Pub, Village Pub and Eatery and Bellingham VFW Hall.
Why did you become a karaoke host?
I was approached and subsequently hired by Stallion Entertainment’s E.J. “Rocky” Balboa because he said I had the voice, personality and energy he was looking for in a host. I have had a wonderful time doing it, and wave the Stallion Entertainment flag proudly. I think we have the best karaoke company in the state.
What type of music do you enjoy singing?
R&B Old School; James Brown, Temptations, Al Green, Marvin Gaye. Those artists are right in my wheelhouse and always get the crowd going.
Type of music you enjoy listening to?
I enjoy all types of music. I feel it makes me well-rounded to appreciate artists from all genres.
Your favorite entertainers/performers?
Patti Labelle, James Brown, Aretha Franklin. These legendary singers really take it to another level when they perform. I also love Boyz II Men and their smooth harmonies.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present), who would it be and why?
Luther Vandross, Gerald Levert. They define cool across multiple generations, and even a few minutes on stage with them would allow me to die happy.
Your biggest musical influence?
O’Jays, Temptations. They are just a couple of the R&B pioneers that paved the way for the artists of today.
Have a musical fantasy?
To have Prince sing “Adore” at my wedding… as long as my bride didn’t leave me at the altar for him!
Memorable stories that you’d like to share?
I sang LADY by Kenny Rogers and a big ol’ cowboy type of guy came up to me crying and said that was the best that he had ever heard that song sung. Needless to say, “Huggy Bear” gave him a hug.
How did you ever hear about the Karaoke Newspaper?
We proudly display the paper at all of our shows, and I’m equally proud to be a part of a company that has so many listings and distribution points around Whatcom and Skagit Counties.
Play any instruments?
Just my pipes. Heck, it’s gotten me this far!
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)?
You name it, I’ve seen it. Stallion Entertainment has possibly the biggest selection on the planet, and it attracts singers of all ages and tastes. It makes the shows much more fun and entertaining when you have such a cross-section of folks who love to sing.
How many songs in your karaoke directory?
75,000+, with around 200 songs added monthly. If it’s on a Karaoke disc, chances are you’ll find it here!
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands?
Church and school choirs, and I do Duets On Demand with my “Royal Family” (More on that later).
Do you enjoy karaoke contests?
I do, although I think the competitive nature of karaoke contests sometimes hurts people’s feelings. Now that I’m on the other side of the mike, I have a better understanding of why bars put on the contests in the first place, and even though it’s not an exact science, the results are usually as fair as one can expect it to be.
Entered any karaoke contests?
Yes. SingWithRocky.com’s “Radio Idol” 2007, and got to sing on KAFE 104.3, which was really cool.
How did you do?
I lost in the finals to a very talented female. But it was a lot of fun, and Rocky ended up hiring me, so I feel like I won in the long run!
Anything about karaoke that you dislike?
I can’t say that I do. The people that attend my shows are fun, talented, and make everybody feel good. There really is no downside from my perspective.
How would you improve the karaoke industry?
I haven’t worked for any other company aside from Stallion Entertainment, so I wouldn’t be the one to ask. However, I will say that everything about the shows I host for him, from the songbook to the sound to the promotions to the audience is 100% first class. I have all the tools necessary to put on an outstanding karaoke night, and I’m thankful for the opportunity to work with the best.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show?
Rocky is the Boss, mind you. But I am “The King.” At my shows I have created what is now known as the “Royal Family,” and singers who have continued to support my shows become members. They are given a title of King, Queen, Prince or Princess. It is my way of saying thank you and that I love and appreciate you. They help me by not only giving great performances, but also in assisting new singers with navigating through our catalog so that I can stay focused on providing a quality show. I believe and stress RESPECT. Respect for the singers, respect for yourself, and respect for my castle. When I have a show in a bar or tavern, I let everyone know “I want to see you again, so drink and be responsible.”
Why should we come to your show?
We have FUN! The house is happy. I’m happy. You will be happy. You may just see a singer (maybe even you?) become a member of the Royal Family!
Like to say anything to our readers?
We invite you to take a ride with the King anytime you are near Stallion Entertainment’s footprint in Whatcom and Skagit Counties. Be good to yourself. Be good to each other. Uncle Rick, the “Huggy Bear” loves you.

Brynjar Halldorrson
Name: Brynjar Halldorrson
Age: Not too old
Company: Independent
Email: brynjar@verizon.net
Zodiac Sign: Gemini
Marital Status: Married to my beautiful Co-host, Debbie
Show: Billy McHale’s, Alderwood Mall, Sun & Tues at 9pm
Azteca, Alderwood Mall, Fridays at 9pm
Day Job: Director of Engineering
Brynjar is such a unique name, where are you from? Iceland
Cool! How long have you been hosting karaoke? Almost 7 years.
Have you hosted at a lot of locations? Just the two.
Why did you become a karaoke host? My wife, Debbie was working for Billy McHale’s. The owners of the bar/restaurant learned from Debbie that we owned a professional sound system and over 6,000 karaoke songs. They asked us if we would be willing to put on a karaoke show at Billy’s. We thought hard and long before making the commitment. We started doing shows on Sundays. And, as time went on. we added two more nights.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? I like to sing all kinds of music, but the songs I mostly perform are songs that most of our customers do not sing. I like to keep the popular songs available to our clients.
Type of music you enjoy listening to? All types of music.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? They are many. My favorite at this time would be Simon & Garfunkel.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? I would love to sing with Simon & Garfunkel. Their music is fun to sing.
Your biggest musical influence? My father. He sang in a men’s choir and was always singing. He also played the harmonica and the accordion.
Have a musical fantasy? Yes. I would like to conduct a mixed choir.
Memorable stories that you would like to share? Before we began having karaoke shows, I was singing karaoke at different places. One day Debbie, my wife, attended the same show that I was singing at and that was the beginning of our over 11-year relationship.
How did you hear about the karaoke newspaper? The paper showed up where we were working. I liked it and Debbie and I have been featured in the past five years.
Play any instruments? Guitar, piano, keyboard, accordion and harmonica.
Type of music usually performed at your location? Some oldies, but mostly new songs, as well as 70’s-90’s.
How many songs in your karaoke directory? Over 9,000.
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? I have sung in a trio, church choirs and in men’s choir.
Entered any karaoke contests? Several.
How did you do? I won several.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? Not really. Most of the time those that win publicly advertised contests are the same people. They go from one contest to another and that’s the only time we see them. I’d rather have something for our faithful customers. We have extraordinarily good singers that come to our shows. I’d like them to benefit from contests.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? I dislike the nights when we have too many people, too drunk and they cause problems.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? I think increasing family-friendly karaoke places would, in the long run, benefit the industry.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? My equipment is a first class professional sound system. My job is to make sure that the music is the background for the singer’s voice and to make the singer’s voice sounds full (not flat) and clear. Debbie’s job is to interact with the customers to make sure they feel at home. The combination of the both of us makes the show outstanding.
Why should we come to your show? Because you will fully enjoy yourself. Both venues have outstanding employees, food and great atmosphere and plenty of drink choices.
Like to say anything to our readers? I would like to thank the karaoke paper for bringing news of the karaoke industry to us and our customers. I would also like to thank Sue Sawyer for the opportunity to introduce myself and my wife. We met Sue at a cancer benefit program in Puyallup where I sang in a showcase along with other terrific singers. Best wishes to the paper and their writers.

Show: Riverside Lanes, Mt. Vernon
13th Ave. Pub, Lynnwood
Nights: Riverside Fridays 9pm-1:30am
13th Ave Saturdays 9pm-Close
Day Job: Steel Worker / Computer Graphics; Starlight Entertainment
Hey guys, how long have you been hosting? (Travis) Five Years / (Melissa) Ten Years.
How many places have you hosted?
Oh wow, that’s got to be a huge number estimate – 30-40 including high schools / tech schools / conventions and major events.
Why did you become a karaoke host? Our passion for music and people, and we both absolutely love to sing and entertain.
What type of music do you enjoy singing?
(Travis) Good ol’ oldies and Rock / (Melissa) Mainstream, Oldies, Classic Rock, Oh! Pop! Anything that can challenge me in another direction, throw it at me I will see what I can do (More giggles).
Type of music you enjoy listening to? (Both) Classic Rock / Rock / Alternative / Blues / Gospel / and good dance-techno.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? (Travis) Chris Cornell (Soundgarden-Audioslave) Ozzy, Steve Perry…
(Melissa) Ah ha ha! So many, but if I had to choose favorites then I suppose they would be Marilyn Monroe, because everything she did was sexy in a quirky kind of way and Cher because she was so diverse and was never afraid to try something new or controversial.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? (Travis) Neil Diamond because he rocks, and the chicks dig him and Bob Seger because he sings with so much meaning and soul. (Melissa) Definitely Cher. God, I would do anything to sing with her even for five seconds, she is just AMAZING! And Tina Turner because, my goodness, can she teach a girl how to sing and dance at the same time!
Your biggest musical influence? That’s a loaded question! (Travis) The Baptist Church started my path and well it goes all the way back to the Carpenters (Laughs!). (Melissa) Oh my, do I have to say? Okay well you would never guess it from me but Black Sabbath / Judas Priest / Rolling Stones / Depeche Mode Ah ha ha! (Blinks) Too many?
Have a musical fantasy? Sure, but I think it’s private. Just kidding, this is a family show! (Travis) Well, to be able to sing and perform in front of a huge crowd 10,000+ with a totally bangin’ band! (Melissa) (Still laughing) To actually sing with Cher! Need you ask?
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? (Travis) Being able to sing in Las Vegas in front of 2,000+ people live was a very memorable and great experience.
(Melissa) Oh my, yes! One experience I will never forget was not about me, it was actually a guy who had come to one of our shows and sang a country song (I cant remember which now). He had me and all the other women crying because he sang so beautifully and with so much emotion that you felt as if he was singing to YOU and I will add, not once looked at the monitor… it was remarkable!
Play any instruments? (Travis) Trumpet. (Melissa) Flute (Don’t even go there), and Bass Guitar.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? All kinds, Country / Rock / Classic Rock / Pop – very diverse, that’s why we love it!
How many songs in your karaoke directory? If we were to count each song I suppose we would have close to 10,000. We try to update regularly. We love to take requests, if we can find it, we will get it!
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? (Travis) No not yet. Why, are you looking for a front man? (Melissa) Manic State, out of Bellingham (Not currently) / Blues Hounds, out of Tacoma (Not currently).
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? (Both) Oh sure! Wait! Singing in them or hosting or judging because that’s all different.
Entered any karaoke contests? (Travis) Yes. (Melissa) Yes.
How did you do? (Travis) won a trip to Las Vegas and was on National TV. Have won several contests over the years, taking 1st–4th place. Won cash prizes and sometimes didn’t place, but we all know how that goes. (Melissa) Won 1st ($500 Woo-Hoo!) 2nd place and was in top 5 /10.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Melissa speaking for both… Absolutely! Maintaining a karaoke business is not cheap and music is way too expensive! Too many people lack karaoke etiquette. There are way too many people who look at every karaoke night out as a competition and try to out do someone else. Come on people, can’t we all just get along?! Leave the Diva status at the door! We are all here to have fun and a good time.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? We would make karaoke music available for every song there ever was. Okay, well, not every song, but you know it’s always the best songs that you can’t get or are discontinued, or you can’t find ANYWHERE. And we would make them cheaper than they are, this is an industry for expression and passion and fun but someone way at the top has to monopolize on it, that irks me.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? (Melissa) Well, yes indeed, lets go there! How many times have you walked into a bar and seen that one totally crazy person running around in costume, making everyone either stare in disbelief or laugh uncontrollably? Well, come to ours and you may see just that! And because we put everything, heart and soul, into our shows. And may I add I give out FREE dance lessons! (Laughs). Our mission statement: To make every show the best show and the most memorable experience for all.
Why should we come to your show? Good people, clean fun & if you want a quality show we go the extra mile to provide for just that. Just call us Mini Rocky and Kristine!
Like to say anything to our readers? Well first, I would have to say that we take being karaoke hosts seriously. We believe that each person deserves the attention and focus making sure the sound and vocals for their performance are tuned in and well balanced. This is our job; we don’t push play and walk away. Hosting karaoke is a personal investment for us, we invest in each one of our guests, we try to accommodate requests, and give everyone the opportunity to shine! We want everyone to have the best time possible and without conflict of any kind.
We have never and will never play favorites. I think this is very important for everyone to understand, because we are all here for the same reason why should anyone be treated differently. So please don’t try to bribe us with drinks or money, because that is an insult to our stature. “But feel free to do so otherwise (wink).
Having karaoke 101 – the basics on how to karaoke class – because so many people are afraid, and really there is nothing to be afraid of. Just belt it out don’t worry if you are loud, we can control that. People also need to know what is okay and what is not okay, like swinging the microphone cord. Do you really want to buy that? And trashing the karaoke books, my biggest pet peeve (they are not cheap to make, and people trash on them all the time. What do you want most, new books or new music?
Providing fun and entertainment or enjoying it should never be a sacrifice. Just have fun, relax, enjoy your friends and others and remember why you really came. And most of all, sing like no one is listening!

Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? Too numerous to mention.

Anything about karaoke that you dislike? When patrons have no etiquette, manners, or respect for the people on stage.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? I think that Karaoke Disc Companies should sponsor our shows.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? I think it’s the comfort of having my show at the first house of traditional Karaoke EVER in Seattle as opposed to moving to different venues on certain nights of the week.
Why should we come to your show? Well… It’s not just my show. We do Karaoke here seven nights a week. We are an established Karaoke house!
Like to say anything to our readers? God respects you when you work, but he LOVES you when you SING!

Jason Davis
Name: Jason Davis
Age: 35
Email: jasonace1989@yahoo.com
Zodiac Sign: Taurus
Marital Status: In a relationship, ecstatic
Show Location: Village Inn, El Gitano
Nights: Wednesday, Friday, Saturday
How long have you been hosting? 11 years
How many places have you hosted? Pretty much every bar in Skagit and Whatcom County at some point and time. I used to have an impersonation show followed by regular karaoke called “showraoke” and it was very popular and ran seven nights a week to a full house.
Why did you become a karaoke host? It just kind of happened. My brother and I were doing our impersonation show and karaoke just fell into it after until the combo become a staple for many bars.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? I love to sing; it doesn’t matter what it is – I will sing it.
Type of music you enjoy listening to? Classic Rock
Your favorite singers/performers? Journey and The Eagles live were two of the most amazing performances I have ever witnessed, but if you are talking about everyday singer/performer, it would be tough to choose between my beautiful Daughter, Adonica, and my gorgeous girlfriend, Emily. They are both so amazing in their own ways.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? Bonnie Raitt because I have been a guitar player my whole life and when I sing along to her CDs I have a blast. So I can only imagine singing live with her; it would be amazing.
Your biggest musical influence? My father. He has been a musician his whole life. He used to open for Chuck Berry, and the whole family lived off the tour bus; it was my intro to music and I was hooked. Everyone in my family plays instruments and sings, but my dad is the most amazing singer I have ever heard, and when people say I sound like him it is the greatest compliment ever.
Have a musical fantasy? To sing in front of the largest crowd ever because I love the rush of performing in front of a large crowd – in fact, the more people, the better I do. But I would be playing my own guitar and singing, not just karaoke.
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? Me and my brother were doing our show and he had to pull my guitar over my head really fast and in the process, smacked me in the forehead and cut my eyebrow. Instead of just quitting, I went on with my costume change, walked out after his song to sing the last song of the show, “Earth Angel” which I crooned to a lady in the front row who was very concerned because, unknowingly, there was a gash on my face bleeding all over my face and shirt. I thought it was sweat – The show must go on!
What instruments do you play? Ha Ha! Yes, 13: trumpet, trombone, saxophone, clarinet, flute, French horn, baritone, tuba, guitar, piano, percussion, violin, cello—I started guitar at age four, the rest in high school, and yes, I can still play them all.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? Seriously, everything. I will even let someone up there with a live instrument.
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? Oh yeah
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? No, because everybody has a different view on good music and good singing, so the best singer (I think) rarely wins. It is a popularity contest – the bias of the crowd or the judge that night. Singing is an art, not a contest.
Entered any karaoke contests? Tried a couple when I was younger. I won one and got sent to Memphis where I took third. I won one in Bellingham and sang the National Anthem at Safeco Field for the Mariners.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Yes, it is the people who boo and hiss and complain, but who won’t get up there. Karaoke is about giving EVERYONE the opportunity to feel what it is like to perform in front of a crowd, so whether or not they are good should not matter – everyone deserves respect for trying it.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? I would remove the jackasses who are trying to monopolize it. This is not a competition about who can get the most shows and be the “big man” it is about pleasing the karaoke community and providing a variety of shows that make everyone happy.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? I feel that I am funny, I am not repetitive, and I don’t talk about myself. It’s not all about me – it’s about the crowd. I am merely hosting.
Why should we come to your show? Because I am entertaining, I don’t take myself too seriously and will make an ass out of myself for a laugh, I have a really fair rotation and I mix the sound individually for every singer.
Like to say anything to our readers? I encourage people to not get stuck in a rut, try new songs and new shows. People get too comfortable at the same show with the same crowd and the same song week after week and it gets tired and old for the singer and the crowd. Branch out and challenge yourself, try something new!

What type of music do you enjoy singing? Rock/Classics/Country/Rap – I do it all!
Type of music you enjoy listening to? Jazz/Christian music – takes my mind off of daily stress.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? Comedians.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? Van Halen with David Lee Roth – that band was the band of all bands.
Biggest musical influence? My mother.
Have a musical fantasy? Yes. Me singing between Madonna and Fergie Ferg.
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? My brother singing Rebel Yell to white wedding was pretty funny. Oops! Oh, and this one time at band camp… ha!
Play any instruments? Guitar and bass.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? Oh country, rock and classic rock. Some rap. And I can’t forget my favorite song, Picture!
How many songs in your karaoke directory? It seems that I have only three songs; Picture, Before He Cheats and Redneck Woman.
Ever sung in any groups/bands? Worship team at church.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? Sometimes.
Entered any karaoke contests? Yes, I entered the Golden Pop Star Contest on our seven day Alaskan cruise.
How did you do? I won.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Rotation Nazi’s – people who show up with 15 minutes left of the show and expect to sing. Singers who think it’s American IdolÉ it’s for fun people, who cares what you sound like – enjoy it!
How would you improve the karaoke industry? I would like all hosts to stop bashing other hosts. If you have a problem with the club don’t take it out on the host. Also, I would like others to respect others shows and keep their business cards in their pockets! Oh, and business owners, remember this, you get what you pay for!
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? First off, I am an entertainer who does karaoke. I make everyone feel at home and try to cater to whomever comes out to my shows.
Why should we come to your show? I am here for you, not the club. Yes, the club pays me, but the people make me who I am, and I am crazy fun!
Like to say anything to our readers? Go out and have a good time. If you’re not having a good time, come to my show and learn what fun is! It’s about fun, fun, fun!

They say everyone, somewhere, has a “twin” walking around. Not just in looks, but with the same statute and natural mannerisms. For music audiences well into their 50’s and 60’s, looking at Ted Vigil taking to the stage would swear John Denver was there, captured in a time warp but without guitar and hep on modern 80’s and 90’s music. As natural as John Denver presented himself, so does Ted Vigil.

Name: Sandra Dee Sorrell
Age: 43
Company: Positive Promotions
Email: positivepromotions@comcast.net
Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
Marital Status: single
Karaoke Show Location: Mazatlan – Kenmore , Big Daddy’s – Woodinville, Marcus’ Martini Heaven – Pioneer Square
When: Wed, Fri, Sat, Tues, Sunday
Day Job: Entertainment Agent
How long have you been hosting? 19 years
How many places have you hosted? Too many to count
Why did you become a karaoke host? After a serious car accident, I needed a business that would turn a good profit and not require me to be present at all times. It was a toss up between karaoke and an espresso stand. I chose karaoke because I like to sleep in. My intention was never to host, but to hire hosts and I would own equipment, book and market karaoke shows, which is what I did for the first several years of owning my business.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? I can’t sing a note. Just to amuse my customers I do a little rapping once in a while.
Type of music you enjoy listening to? R&B, Hip-Hop, Soul
Your favorite entertainers/performers? The late Luther Vandross, Josh Groban, Will Smith, E,W,F and Ludacris
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? I don’t think anyone would want me to sing with them.
Your biggest musical influence? Sly and The Family Stone
Have a musical fantasy? Being a Fly Girl on in Living Color
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? Listening to one of my retired hosts Davey B, interjecting current slang words in the style of Frank Sinatra into an “Old Blue Eyes” song. Now that’s talent! The list of words started in 1992 and is still around today. Yeah! Boyeeee!
Play any instruments? No
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? Wide varieties depending on location and night of the week
How many songs in your karaoke directory? Each location is different. Minimum library 20,000 and max is 40,000
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? Nope. I have managed , booked and produced artists/shows.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? They don’t ever seem to come out right.
Entered any karaoke contests? Never.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Sometimes people forget that singing is about being in your joy and having fun. As the karaoke singer has become more educated, it seems the less fun they are having.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? By reminding karaoke business owners that there will always be plenty of venues for shows and that the perfect rooms for each will always show up. Over the almost 20 years I have been in business, not once have I tried to take someone else’s show. In fact, just the opposite, I have helped others with contracts, marketing and obtaining equipment. I would love to see more integrity in the business owners and see the singers not take karaoke so seriously.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? Number one; my regular customers are a great bunch of human beings, not to mention that some of them are awesome singers. I pride myself in running a very fair rotation which cannot be changed, not even for a price, and making each singer sound his or her best. Each venue has something unique about it; The Mazatlan is The “Cheers” of Kenmore . I’ve had a show there for fifteen years. If you show up for dinner, order #33. Big Daddy’s has darts, pool tables, a stage, dance floor, amazing sound, great food and my partner in crime the “Singing Bartender Jen”. Marcus’ Martini Heaven is eclectic with its leather couches, plasma screens, monthly featured artists, the Best Martinis in Seattle and personable bartenders, Andy and Clete.

What do I enjoy most about karaoke? The camaraderie, the people’s enjoyment.

Seth, how long have you been hosting? “Approximately 15 years. Five for another company, 10 on my own.”
How many places have you hosted? “19”
Why did you become a karaoke host? “I love music and like to be where people are happy, partying and having a great time. What a great job!”
What type of music do you enjoy singing? “Classic rock and oldies.”
Type of music you enjoy listening to? “Classic rock, some newer rock and some newer country.”
Your favorite entertainers/performers? “Elvis will always be King! But I also like many others, like Steve Miller, The Platters, Kiss, Black Sabbath, Judas Priest, Lynard Skynard, The Eagles, Ronny James Dio, Deep Purple, Led Zeppelin. Rock on!”
If you could sing with anyone (past or present), who would it be and why? “I think I would like to sing with Elvis. I do pretty good on some of his songs. That would be a dream come true and a set to remember.”
Your biggest musical influence? “This is a 2-way question for me. First, my mom is the person who used to drive around with the radio on all the time and always encouraged me to sing along to every song that played. Second, Kiss and Black Sabbath were my first favorite bands and I knew I would be a rocker for life.”
Have a musical fantasy? “Every male karaoke host has musical fantasies and that’s all I’m saying about that!”
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? “I have been having a great time doing this for so long, I can’t really think of just one. So I’ll just say, every night is a story in the making, and it’s the customers/singers that really make the difference. They are why I’m here and loving my job.”
Play any instruments? “No.”
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? “We have singers of all ages, so you could hear anything from old show tunes to hard rock, hip-hop and pop, country western, and what I call young country or new country. Anything is possible.”
How many songs in your karaoke directory? “Approximately 10,000 songs.”
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? “When I was 19 to 22, I sang in a number of heavy metal bands. Only one was right for my voice; a 50’s, 60’s, 70’s classic rock group called the Time Bandits. It was a blast!”
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? “Sometimes, when they are run fairly – no favorites, and just because she looked great in a skirt, doesn’t mean she wins.”
Entered any karaoke contests? “Yes, many when I first started in the business.”
How did you do? “Won some, lost some. I made it to the state finals in the Nat’l contest in ‘95. That night I got beat by Sammy V. and had no problem with that – he did a great job!”
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? “The only thing would be the people who go to a show and see how much fun it is when it’s a good show, then they go out and buy the cheapest system they can and undercut a good show’s price. Whether they get the show or not, they start messing with the price-per-night structure.”
How would you improve the karaoke industry? “I would like more music to be available to us. Not just a few songs by one group, but all of every group. That would make it better for sure.”
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? “I don’t mess around. I don’t play music between songs because I want to get everyone who wants to sing up to sing. My rotation is written down, and the only deviation from that is new singers added to the rotation.”
Why should we come to your show? “If you like having a good time and want to sound good doing it, then check us out at Stars Bar & Grill in Federal Way.”
Like to say anything to our readers? “There are lots of places and people running karaoke all over any town. Not that many are really all that good or have great sound and selection. I do, and I am good at it, so come on in and see why my company motto is: “You’ve sang with the rest, come sing with the best.” I have a pretty good reputation in this business and I’ve earned it.”

What made you get into hosting? One night at a place called “Good Time Ernies” in Burien, I was just there for karaoke… when it was my turn, the karaoke host asked me if I knew any jokes. I said my joke then I sang my song… he came up to me afterwards and offered me his job!

EJ “Rocky” Balboa
Name: EJ “Rocky” Balboa
Age: 35 and holding!
Company: Stallion Entertainment
Email: rocky@singwithrocky.com
Zodiac Sign: Capricorn
Marital Status: Single but attached
Show Location: Bellingham: Cabin Tavern on Thursdays & Ferndale: Cedars Tavern on Saturdays
Day Job: I do freelance voice work for local radio stations and advertising agencies.
How did you get the nickname? First off, my last name’s Balboa, so that’s a big D-U-H. Plus, I’m a southpaw, and I take a great beating. Yo Adrian!
How did you hear about the Karaoke & Entertainment Guide? Shortly after I bought my business I became aware of this great resource. Many thanks to Ty and his company for filling this niche in the market!
How long have you been doing karaoke? I can’t remember the first time I actually sang to a Karaoke disc, but I’ve been onstage since I was two. My parents have always nurtured and encouraged expression through the arts, and they continue to be an important part of my life.
What types of music do you enjoy singing? Classic Rock Anthems from the 70’s, 80’s and 90’s. I have a powerful delivery and range, and enjoy belting out the butt-rock whenever the mood hits me.
Favorite song to sing? Journey’s DON’T STOP BELIEVING, the song I sang for AMERICAN IDOL. I’ve forgiven Simon…sort of.
To listen to? Rush’s 2112 Overture. I think they’re the most amazing rock trio of all time.
Favorite performer? Emily Mizen, my fiery, redheaded girlfriend. Great pipes, and check out those lungs!
CD in your car right now? Motley Crue LIVE. I know, I know …
Do you play any instruments? Guitar, piano and saxophone, but only good enough to get the girl.
Do you sing or have you sung in any groups/bands? I fronted a band in High School and we played at bars in the greater Seattle area through my mid-20’s. When it was apparent I wasn’t going to be a rock star that actually gets paid, I got a degree in broadcasting and worked on the radio for 15 years or so, then rekindled my interest in singing by forming STALLION ENTERTAINMENT, and it’s been a huge success so far.
What’s the largest crowd that you have sung in front of? Roughly 12,000 people at the Tacoma Dome, during an on-air stint at Y-104.9 FM, now known as “The Funky Monkey.” The great thing about bright, in-your-face stage lighting is you can’t see the crowd-or apparently hear their applause, either, Hmm.
If you could sing with anyone with anyone who would it be? Steve Perry of Journey, my favorite rock vocalist. If you’re reading this, Steve, I haven’t stopped believin’!
Most famous person you’ve ever met? Johnny Cash, about a year before he passed. I rarely wig out when I meet a celebrity, but I’ll never forget the experience. I shook his hand and actually FELT a rush come over me, like some sort of energy-aura-vibration-thingy passed through me. Is that weird? Don’t answer that.
Do you have any musical fantasies? Actually WINNING a Karaoke contest – I’ve never taken first place in my life! (Can I buy you a drink, Mr. Judge? Mow your lawn? Paint your house? Please?)
Any memorable karaoke stories that you would like to share? As a host, I get to meet a lot of interesting (though rarely sober) people. I’ve had couples get engaged on-stage, soldiers reliving their stints in the Gulf, even a Hurricane Katrina victim who lost it all when the levees broke. For me, the ability to make somebody famous, even for 3 ½ minutes, allowing them to forget their troubles, hear the applause, feel the love. It’s an honor to be a part of that.
What do you enjoy about karaoke? Like I said, it’s the wide range of personalities you come in contact with. Music is one of the few forms of expression that crosses age, race and gender boundaries-I dare you to find a more eclectic group of people so dedicated in a common pursuit, and the camaraderie is unlike anything I’ve ever been a part of.
Is there anything you dislike about karaoke? It rarely happens at one of my shows, but I think it’s a crime when an audience refuses to participate. Leaving your guts on the stage and hearing crickets (or even boos!) can be devastating, to both the performer AND the show. Shame on you if you’re too self-absorbed to appreciate another’s art form.
If you could improve karaoke what would you do? More and more, I see singers bringing their own discs with them, not necessarily because they want to, because they HAVE to. Too many shows out there have pitifully poor selection, and it forces the patrons to spend even more of their own money just to have a good time. I carry over 30,000 titles, and I think the singers appreciate knowing they get to perform to the best versions of their favorite songs without a trip to the CD store.
What’s your favorite website? Mine! www.SingWithRocky.com is way more than just show info-You can hear mp3s of singers, gossip in the chatroom, print your own slips online, even place a personal ad! It’s as close as you can get to a “Rocky” show without actually being there. Click it for yourself!
Tattoo(s)? Yes.
Beverage of choice? A protein shake in the morning, one for lunch, and a Coors Light for dinner. (BTW-The best part about beer? It’s Fat-free!)
What is the nicest thing you’ve done for a stranger? I donated one of my backup Karaoke systems to a local boys and girls club, and spent some time training the kids in the art of mixing. Who knows, I could be responsible for the next rising star!
What would your tag line be? Stallion Entertainment – Putting the “Care” in Karaoke.
Would you like to say anything special to our readers? Karaoke is more popular than ever, and our ranks are growing by leaps and bounds-I would encourage our veterans to make newer members feel welcome, appreciated, and respected… Only then can we ensure the continued forward progress of this incredible, reliable and easily-accessible form of self-expression. See you at the show!

Captain Kirk
Name: Captain Kirk
Zodiac Sign: Gemini, born June 1, 1956. Yesh I know, I am going to be 50 this year!
Marital Status: I met my wife back in 1986 at a place called The Great Wall Of China in Tacoma. I spent some evenings there listening and dancing with the bands. Juli (my wife) was one of the bartenders and we got to know each other. Soon we started to go out together and five months later we were married. I have been married to my best friend for the last 19 years and have enjoyed every minute of our marriage.
Show Location: Charlie’s Restaurant in Puyallup
Day Job: I am a full time father to a wonderful seven year old girl named Maya. My wife now works at a medical facility and I host karaoke five nights. I now appreciate all the things my Mom did for us kids since I am now Mr. Mom and love it!”
How did you get the nickname? Years ago, before I got involved in the hosting part of karaoke, my wife and I used to go to a place that had karaoke and the host used to call me up to sing by saying ‘ARRRRG… It’s time for the captain to sing…’ I guess the name stuck. By the way, my real name is Kirk.
How did you hear about the Karaoke & Entertainment Guide? They have been around for quite some time now. Just about every bar that has karaoke has a stack of them (papers) by the doors or by the phones.”
How long have you been doing karaoke? “I started singing karaoke back in the early 90’s when it first started in this area. I began my hosting in 1994 with a friend of mine named Vern Palm. Vern owned two systems at the time and I ran one on a part time basis while he ran the other. In 1995 I bought my own system and the rest is history as they say…”
What types of music do you enjoy singing? I enjoy singing many styles of music… country, rock, soul, old R&B and pop.
Favorite song to sing? Me & Mrs. Jones is my most favorite.
To listen to? I don’t listen to the radio much. I guess the music I like to listen to the most nowadays are the singers that come to my show. There are a lot of very talented people here in this area.
Favorite performer? My favorite would have to be Garth Brooks. His style and stage performance are unmatched by most singers.
CD in your car right now? Sorry, no CD player in my car.
Do you play any instruments? I play the guitar. I am teaching my daughter to play now.
Do you sing or have you sung in any groups/bands? While working as a bartender in Gig Harbor back in the 90’s, I sang with the band that played there.
What’s the largest crowd that you have sung in front of? At the place I bartended in Gig Harbor. I got up and sang with the band in front of about 350 people. Keep in mind, these are the people I have been serving for the last four or five years and now I am on stage singing a song. Butterflies? YES! Fun? Without a doubt!
If you could sing with anyone with anyone who would it be? Garth Brooks or Alan Jackson.
Most famous person you’ve ever met? Dennis Robbins, Marty Robbins’ son. I also met Red Addair back in the 80’s at the Port of Tacoma. This famous oil disaster fire fighter was purchasing equipment from where my dad and I worked. There was a movie made about him. John Wayne played his part.
Do you have any musical fantasies? No musical fantasy to speak of. I have enjoyed being a K-host for over a decade and plan to continue for a long time.
Any memorable karaoke stories that you would like to share? I had been advertising a New Year’s Eve ‘practice party’ on 12/29/05, but the real reason I wanted a large crowd that night was because I had some awards made up to give away. One was for ‘inspirational singer’ another, ‘most improved’, female/male singer of the year and male/female entertainer of the year. The response I received from awards night is something that will make me smile every time I think about it. There were a lot of folks that were impressed by that night and thought it was a cool thing to do. Several award winners cried. It makes you feel kind of good inside.
What do you enjoy about karaoke? It gives people in the bars something to do other than just drink and visit with each other. I personally enjoy all the good singers that come out and show off their talent.
Is there anything you dislike about karaoke? Impatient drunks that don’t or won’t understand that their turn is in rotation along with everyone else.
If you could improve karaoke what would you do? I used to wish the newer songs would come out faster, but now the songs are coming out before you can buy the original artist’s version. (Pretty cool, huh?)
What’s your favorite website? Ebay
Tattoo(s)? I have a ‘Star Trek The Next Generation’ communicator tattooed on my right shoulder so my wife is always in touch with me.
Beverage of choice? Coffee and Brandy.
What is the nicest thing you’ve done for a stranger? Donations would have to be the nicest thing I (we) have done. My wife and I sponsor a child through World Vision and have done so since we’ve been married. We donate to the boot drive the fire fighters put on each year and we donate clothing quite often to various yearly drives.
What would your tag line be? Try new songs, you just might find out how good you really are.
Would you like to say anything special to our readers? There are a lot of people that sing nightly and don’t have a problem with getting up in front of others, but when there are first timers, please don’t forget to show your support and clap your hands for them as well as every singer. It makes it so much more fun for everybody in the clubs when everybody gets the same respect. Remember, some of the people are scared to death to get up there. They do it anyway.

Fehrone Williams
Name: Fehrone Williams
Age: 37
Zodiac Sign: Pisces
Marital Status: Single
Karaoke Show Location: Taster’s Wok
When: Thursdays, 9:30pm-Close
Day Job: People actually have these?
How long have you been hosting? 5 years.
How many places have you hosted? Six venues in Montgomery, AL and three venues in the Seattle area.
Why did you become a karaoke host? It was a fun way to earn a supplemental income. We make it look easy and fun, but it is a job, folks.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? 70’s Classic Rock (esp: Southern and light), Vintage R&B, some current Pop (used to be heavy into Pop back in AL), 80’s and 90’s Pop and even some Country, did I mention I’m from Alabama?
Type of music you enjoy listening to? Gospel, some Urban, Country, Jazz (especially vocal) and Dance.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? I love (Jazz vocalist) Nancy Wilson, also Oleta Adams, Patti LaBelle, Anita Baker, Michael Buble, George Benson, Jason Mraz, Al Jarreau, Lionel Richie, Chaka Khan, KD Lang, Annie Lennox, Jill Scott, Gwen Stefani, Moby and Jamiroquai. I grew up on and really dig the old Phunk groups like Earth, Wind and Fire, Con Funk Shun, Brick, The Isley Brothers and The Commodores, just to name a few.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? It’s a tie between two vocal jazz groups; Manhattan Transfer and Take 6, because, wow, are their harmonies mind blowing!
Your biggest musical influence? My “Mama”, Dorothy Allen. I am a gospel musician, and Ms. Allen trained me in how to be a MOM (Minister of Music). She also encouraged me to continue to use the musical gifts God gave me.
Have a musical fantasy? You want me to pick just ONE? Seriously, to record a duet with local artist, Tony Cea, would be the bomb!
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? None that you could print here. This is a family publication. Kidding. Okay, no I’m not. Seriously though, I went over to sing one night at a venue in Kenmore and got there to find out that a friend of mine had erroneously told the host there that I had been asked to sing with the group Timeless Soul. The truth was that I had met and hung out with a couple of the members of Timeless Soul a few nights earlier while doing karaoke. They were very complimentary of my vocal ability, but that was about it. It turned out that the host was the one who discovered Timeless Soul and one of those members that had heard me sing was also there. Before I knew what was happening, I was being forced (okay, I’d just finished singing a selection and the host asked me to stay at the mic) to harmonize with the member on his karaoke selection. An impromptu audition? I hope not. Oh well, I hope that San and Sir Charles enjoyed my impression of a deer in headlights.
Play any instruments? Piano, keyboard and organ. I played the clarinet in Junior High and High School, but gave it up after that.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? A refreshing variety, from Pop to the standards, Rock to Country, Rap to Easy Listening/Jazz and a few interesting creations that I really don’t know how to classify.
How many songs in your karaoke directory? 20,000.
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? I’ve sung in a few gospel ensembles, one of which recorded an album. It was just a local thing back in Alabama.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? I do.
Entered any karaoke contests? I have.
How did you do? I won a $300 winner-take-all karaoke contest back in Alabama, which lead to my being asked to train and become a host for the company that was running the contest. That is how I became a karaoke host. Here in the Seattle area, I took a $300, first place prize in a Legends Karaoke Contest at the Taster’s Wok in Lynnwood. Not only did that open up the doors of opportunity for hosting here in Washington, it eventually lead to my now being a host at the Wok. Oh yeah, and there was a Christmas Cash Karaoke Contest at Leilani Lanes a couple of years ago where Spree got robbed.
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? 1) Impatient Singers. 2) Times when the audience is made up of cliques that only support or react when their friends are singing and ignore, or are rude to anyone else singing. 3) People who think it’s cool to yell into the microphone for no apparent reason. 4) My biggest dislike is when I’ve worked fairly and expeditiously through a hella-long rotation on a hella-busy night and find my tip jar is empty at the end of the night.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? By reminding people, whether wildly talented or mildly talented, that karaoke is supposed to be F-U-N. Leave your troubles, politics and attitude at the door, loosen up and entertain yourself and each other. Why do I suddenly feel the urge to spray paint a hat and wear it with a cap on over it?
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? I make EVERY singer feel special, whether they be a karaoke virgin or seasoned with a long list of accolades. They get a big introduction, a smile and encouragement from me as they take their turn behind the mic, and an enthusiastic prompting of the audience to show appreciation for their efforts when they are done.
Why should we come to your show? To discover that yes, you CAN sound THAT good singing that song that’s been running through your mind for hours, days, weeks or even just a few minutes. And it was easy and fun too. I won’t say painless.
Like to say anything to our readers? Thanks to all you wonderfully talented vocalists that decide to spend time at the show. I only call it MY show when drunks try and take over. And remember, if someone really gets on your last nerve, give ‘em an attitude check! (don’t read those last two words out loud if you’re faint of heart).

Why did you become a karaoke host? We both enjoy being around people and truly live and breathe music.
What type of music do you enjoy singing? Pretty much all genres. We both have our preferences, but there is quality music in every type of music imaginable, you just have to be exposed to it, and the funny thing about it is karaoke actually gives you that type of education – there are songs that we both hadn’t heard before until people sang them in karaoke form and we learned to appreciate them. You can learn so much just by listening to others, it’s priceless.

Type of music you enjoy listening to? Triple Jay: The music of Motown, Classic Soul and R & B, Smooth Jazz and anything with four-part vocal harmony.
Michellay: Bebop, Acid Jazz, Funk, Neo Soul, songwriter-driven music, Alternative, 80’s. I’m also a sucker for quality vocal tone and singers with excellent vocal technique, but is has to be from the heart.
Your favorite entertainers/performers? Triple Jay: Marvin Gaye and David Ruffin, The original Temptations”, EWF. Michellay: Whitney Houston, Stevie Wonder, Aretha Franklin, Take 6, Donna Summer, Barbra Streisand, Rachelle Ferelle, Ella Fitzgerald.
If you could sing with anyone (past or present) who would it be and why? Triple Jay: Marvin Gaye and the Temptations. Marvin Gaye was a great story-teller when he sang his songs and the Temptations had voices that were off the hook and incomparable choreography. They set the standard for today’s vocal groups.
Michellay: Ella Fitzgerald and Rachelle Ferelle. Ella Fitzgerald was an incredible improviser, had great phrasing and diction and had an instrumentalist mind set. Rachelle Ferelle, I had the opportunity to see her live at the Jazz Alley. There are not too many people that can make my jaw drop but she did. She has all the attributes I enjoy as a listener; vocal technique, unique phrasing, range, captivating stage banter, quality vocal tone and she sings from her heart. Her incredible piano-playing is an added bonus.
Your biggest musical influence? Triple Jay: Marvin Gaye and the
Temptations. Michellay: Whitney Houston, Aretha Franklin and Ella Fitzgerald.
Have a musical fantasy? Triple Jay: Singing for a full capacity crowd at Madison Square Garden. Michellay: My dream since I was a kid is to sing on Broadway one day.
Memorable stories that you’d like to share? Triple and Michellay: We remember one night when we were hosting at a place in North Seattle and Charlie Rich was traveling through and actually got up to sing his own song, “Behind Closed Doors”. He was real cool, real down to earth and left us a fat $50 tip. You just never know who you’ll end up meeting in karaoke.
Play any instruments? Triple Jay: Bass and Drums. Michellay: Piano, Violin and Drums.
Type of music generally performed at your location(s)? All kinds, it really depends of the mood of the crowd.
How many songs in your karaoke directory? We haven’t actually counted the number but there is a good mix of just about everything to keep you busy.
Do you or have you sung in any groups/bands? Yes, we’ve have both sung with bands/groups, but we prefer karaoke because it’s the most consistent work out there and you don’t have to sing for three straight sets and wear out your voice in the process. Triple Jay: Klass, Profonics, High Class among a few. Michellay: I’ve fronted my own jazz group, Miya Collins Trio.
Do you enjoy karaoke contests? Yes, it’s a great way to expose what you are capable of as an entertainer, and your fellow competitors challenge you to become the best you can possibly be.
Entered any karaoke contests? Yes.
How did you do? The one contest that stands out in both of our minds is a contest we entered in 1994. CJ Fox, Karaoke and Lighting Store, organized a huge karaoke contest at Club Broadway, there were a total of 2.000 who entered the preliminary rounds at qualifying clubs in various cities in Washington. In the end there were 50 finalists competing and we ended up winning 1st place doing our own duet interpretation of “At this Moment.”
Anything about karaoke that you dislike? Impatient singers.
How would you improve the karaoke industry? We’d like to see more live musicians embrace karaoke and participate in the fun of karaoke by bringing in their harmonica, saxophone or guitar, it really adds to the overall entertainment value.
What’s unique or special about your karaoke show? We are true music lovers and appreciate all types of styles and singers. We love to provide background vocals and harmonies when requested and try to help singers out when they need assistance with their songs.
Our show is a place where you can entertain or be entertained whether it be singing karaoke or dancing the night away. We are the kind of hosts who let people sing and don’t hog the mic all night… “it’s all about you, the public.”
Why should we come to your show? We tend to attract some really great singers of high caliber that are quite entertaining, it’s almost like going to a concert without paying the price of admission.
Like to say anything to our readers? Triple Jay: “If you love to sing, listen to good music or see a karaoke show on another level come to the Shi Lin in Bellevue.”
