Karaoke Corner: A word with a Champion

By Rocky and Kristine

Well the time has finally arrived. Time for what, you ask? Time for more exciting news and updates on the local karaoke and live entertainment scene, of course!

At this writing, we’re gearing up for the Billy Idol concert in Seattle, at the Showbox Sodo. We’re so excited to be a part of playmybirthdaybillyidol.com and watching as Michael Henrichsen’s dream comes true. For those who don’t know the story, check back here next month for a full report on this amazing event.

Recently, I sat down with this year’s Evergreen Idol winner, Scott Crawford, for a brief interview. I’d like to share that with you here.

First of all, congratulations to all of you who participated in Evergreen Idol 2012. This event continues to grow each year, and has remained popular since its inception. Sound Light Karaoke has done an amazing job of maintaining the Evergreen Idol contest over the years, and remains a true staple in the world of Northwest karaoke. Can’t wait to see what will be up their sleeves in 2013.

Scott, first of all, way to go buddy. What an amazing victory! Tell us, how did you ever hear about Evergreen Idol  in the first place? On The Wolf radio station, driving home after looking for jobs.

Where did you qualify to begin with? I went to a few different places, but the first place I qualified at, to go to the Fair, was The Getaway in Mountlake Terrace, with their amazing Karaoke Host Dena. The Getaway is a great bar with an amazing staff, awesome patrons, and in my experience, collectively some of the best singers in the area.

How many places did you qualify at exactly? I actually qualified for the Finals at five different bars, but the Getaway was first.

After winning the competition, you opened for Rodney Atkins. What a thrill that must’ve been! Did you get to hang out with the band at all, and what did you think of them? I had the great opportunity to speak briefly with Mr. Atkins and his tour manager. His tour manager actually made it a point to seek me our after my performance to tell me I did a great job and he wants me to continue pursuing music.

What do you think will come out of all of this, any leads or offers yet? Well, as funny and awkward and as it has been for me, the main thing that’s been happening since performing at the fair is the multitude of people who have sought me out on Facebook to say they are a fan and are looking for other ways to hear music from me. Because of this interest, I am currently working on creating some YouTube videos, and also hopefully some original music soon.

Are you in a steady relationship, and what does your girlfriend think about your big win? I have the most amazing girlfriend who has always supported me. She was very excited for my win, and is currently helping me work on what’s next.

I’m sure you’re thrilled about taking 1st Place, Scott, what’s next as far as competitions go? Well, I got a lead on a national competition coming up in March. I’ve heard there’s an opportunity to win a trip, and a grand prize of $5,000.00.

Anything in particular you’d like to tell your fans? I’m just happy to have fans in the first place, besides my mom. If you enjoy my music please watch for me on YouTube and Facebook. I hope to have some original music available in the next little while. If you want to hang out, have a drink, and do some singin’, join me at the Getaway in Mountlake Terrace with Dena.

Well Scott, congratulations again, and thanks so much for your time. We certainly hope to see, and hear more from you, very soon. You represented Washington well at the Evergreen State Fair 2012. We wish you the best in future endeavors, musically and personally.
