Soar to the next level
at The Vocalist Studio
The Pacific Northwest has a strong tradition of contemporary vocal arts. This is the region that saw the birth of famous rock vocal artists such as Ann Wilson (Heart), Lane Staley (Alice in Chains), Geoff Tate (Queensryche), Chris Cornell (Soundgarden) and countless local talent offering great vocal artistry and new innovative approaches to adding melody to music.
Robert Lunte developed his vocal talent and teaching methodology out of this rich environment and influence. Inspired by Rock "crooners" such as Steve Perry, Rob Halford and Geoff Tate, he set out 20 years ago to develop a technique that would take the voice to its absolute performance envelope. Today, Robert is an expert in helping singers of all levels to develop incredible vocal range, operatic endurance and mind/body control through visualization techniques.
The Vocalist Studio (TVS) evolved out of a need for singers to have a legitimate alternative to traditional classical voice pedagogy. Where classical singers focus on achieving tonal beauty and articulation of vowels, rock and metal singers can't focus purely on absolute timbre perfection because contemporary styles of singing often supercede classical techniques' ability to meet the demands of distorted textures ("rhaspy" singing) and high-velocity singing. This breed of singer is busy hyper-extending their range between the upper and lower registers, singing with a variety of stylistic colors in sometimes adverse conditions and generally must have endurance of steel, lungs of iron and a PA that "goes to 11".
Simply put, TVS recognizes that great rock and pop singing is a legitimate, contemporary art form that requires its own, unique skill set and techniques. At TVS we are pioneers in recognizing this unique art form and we pride ourselves in studying and performing a proven technique that is "architected" specifically for vocalists of modern rock and metal music and applying it in practical application on the live performance stage. You can safely say, we are not teaching people how to sing a lyrical, 18th Century German Art Song... we are specialists and trained vocal "athletes" for 21st Century Art Rock... and that's the difference.
Last, but not least, The Vocalist Studio offers students a fantastic live sound stage with PA system and microphones to work with. Core to our philosophy and attitude, we believe that lessons with no amplification, in the context of contemporary singing styles, is an obsolete, mis-matched practice and generally has little relevance or interest to what TVS students are trying to achieve. Therefore, when you come into TVS, expect to work with the tools of the trade, move freely, turn the PA up to "11" and lets get to work.
