Rocky & Kristine’s Karaoke Corner
DON’T DRINK AND SLEEP!
Welcome fellow karaoke singers and karaoke enthusiasts! This month I want to explore a subject that recently affected me, and can affect anyone at any time, so listen up.
There are many ailments in this world, but this one was news to me, and scared the bejesus out of me too. I awoke early one Saturday morning, mouth dry from the change in climate, and probably sleeping with my mouth wide open, snoring like an Ox. Everything in the back of my throat was all stuck together. I sat up in a panic, grabbed a bottle of water and downed it, but felt like I was trying to swallow my own tongue, or throat, or some part of my anatomy that just wasn’t going down!
Tim’s Tavern presents Katybelle!
Check out Katybelle’s brand new karaoke at Tim’s Tavern on N 105th in Seattle, a self-proclaimed Retro Dive Bar, just up the road from the Rickshaw.
Seattle area karaoke fan, Katybelle, formed Katybelle Productions when she was searching for something to do with her extra time. Seemed like a perfect fit, and since hosting her Tuesday thru Thursday night karaoke at Tim’s Tavern, she’s managed to build a nice little following already.
ROCKTHEBLUES.COM MUSIC REVIEW
Interview with Jess Hamilton, The Hipsters
By Julie Onsum, RockTheBlues
Musical taste: All. Notables include Counting Crows, Kings of Leon, The Killers, Train, Tool, Third Eye Blind, The Cult, REM (pre ‘90s), Matchbox 20, Led Zepplin, Aerosmith.
Last year, Jess was able to play on the same stage as Everclear – not too bad!
Influences started early. Raised on a diet of Elvis, Wynette, Campbell, and Martin from his Mom’s vinyl collection, Jess was surrounded by vocal-centric artists for much of his early years.
Oh!Houlies what a good time!
By Kristine Fields
If you’re thinking about venturing out to find a new karaoke spot, we’d like to ask, have you been to O’Houlies lately?
Just north of Seattle at exit #220 in Mountlake Terrace, take a left over the freeway, O’Houlies is down the hill on the right. What a fun place for karaoke! A great spot outside your usual karaoke zone. Yes, I said karaoke. O’Houlies has karaoke in spades! I don’t know what that means, but it’s a lot! How many nights a week, you ask? Well allow me to be the bearer of good news. You are invited to sing to your heart’s content at O’Houlies every Thursday, Friday, Saturday, and twice on Sundays! Actually, it’s just once on Sunday, like the other days.
Dee Effin Karaoke Hot Spot: “LET’S GET IT ON” this valentines day
As Marvin Gay would say, LET’S GET IT ON! WOOOHOOO, LETS GET IT ON. COME ON BABY!
February is the month of love! And if you’ve been following my articles, you know I lay out the bad along with the good. That said, and knowing that it’s LOVERS month, I will try to keep it light! But this might get a little sexy, so if you have kids, especially boys, don’t have them read this unless you want someone’s parents knocking on your door saying, “Your son just seduced my daughter and they are way to young to be doing what I caught them doing! What the hell are you teaching your kid anyway?!
Seattle Swing!
By Ty Hughes
One night last month, I took the whirlwind tour around Seattle and poked my head into several popular Seattle karaoke houses. Ride along and see what I found!
Buzz Inn for Family karaoke
By Rocky & Kristine Fields
We’re always being asked, “Where can we take our kids to go sing karaoke?” I always refer folks to the All Ages karaoke section on page 14 of this very publication, and remind them to please call before they head out to confirm the times, etc.
Well, we’ve found a brand new location and show to add to the list! The Smokey Point Buzz Inn, located right off I-5 at exit #206, now has an all ages karaoke show every Friday from 8pm-10pm. Karaoke Host Mike puts on a fun show in the restaurant at The Buzz Inn that’s starting to catch on already. We stopped in during the second week and found several families enjoying dinner and being serenaded by their children. Even the parents were getting up and singing as well.
“Certified” Oregon karaoke at Mr. B’s in Troutdale
By Kurt “Swingcat” Johnson
This is the first in an ongoing series of articles featuring fully-certified, legal, non-pirating karaoke venues, and the KJs who have passed the certification process to become legitimate karaoke providers.
With all the recent controversy surrounding the Sound Choice karaoke infringement lawsuits in Oregon, it’s difficult to find a legally compliant karaoke show these days. They are few and far between, that’s for sure.
We’ve scoured the landscape in search of just such a show. Here, we will spotlight their show, so you might be better informed and will support these particular shows over another that may be practicing illegal pirating of their music. These locations have been proactive in taking precautions to get certified, and currently enjoy a professional, guilt-free karaoke show worthy of your attendance.
ROCK THE BLUES NEWS & music review
By Gary Draper
January was a very difficult month for many. The snow, the ice storms, the loss of power, people stuck at home, concerts and shows/events canceled. What a mess! My heart goes out to everyone who was affected in a negative way. Hopefully February will include much less dramatic weather.
I didn’t get out much last month. However, I did go to a Thursday night jam at H.D. Hotspurs in Kent. BADD is the hosting band there on Thursday nights – a very talented trio that plays Classic Rock, Hard Rock, Blues, etc. and they do it very well.
Sing and compete at Pacific Lanes
By Ty Hughes
Our lover-girl Jodee is hosting karaoke at the Pacific Lanes in Tacoma every Thursday, Friday, and Saturday night. She’s found herself a pretty good gig over there, right near her home, and is excited about building the show.
Pacific Lanes has two bars, one at each end of the building, but the karaoke bar is unmistakable. Jodee sets up her karaoke CAVs system at the far end of the bigger bar at the southend. Once she flips on the machine and the microphone, those soft, comfy swivel chairs fill up awfully quick.
Join the karaoke revolution at Marco Polo
By Ty Hughes
After two days in the dark, wrestling with candles and batteries, I was getting stir crazy at home. My mind was made up, I was off to Seattle’s Marco Polo Tavern for the world’s most incredible chicken dinner.
Just as I was walking out the door, the entire neighborhood came roaring back to life. I whistled all the way to Seattle.
No power outages here. Fourth Avenue in SODO was lit up with colorful lights bouncing off the street’s surface. Inside the Marco Polo, DJ Kevin Kelly had a roomful of cute young singers, so that warm and genuine smile of his was getting a real workout.
