ONE EYED JACKS ROADHOUSE; LYNNWOOD, WA Mardi Gras comes to One Eyed Jacks

By Ty Hughes

One Eyed Jacks in Lynnwood hosted a Kamikaze Karaoke Kontest on Fat Tuesday last month. The bar was all dressed up in Mardi Gras themes, plus a healthy number of necklaces to give away. One Eyed Jack’s is the hardest working bar around to bring you quality entertainment.

Surprisingly, the expected throng of writhing humanity never showed. But those that did were treated to some interesting entertainment, that’s for sure!

Seven singers wanted to battle it out for the fifty-dollar cash prize. Tom devised a fun way to determine the songs they’d sing for their suicide run. First, they drew a strip of fabric; blue for boy song, pink for girl song. Then everybody drew a ping pong ball with a genre of music on it. None of the singers know what song they’re singing until it comes up on the screen.

So, Ashley gets a girl’s rap song, how about Buffalo Stance? She pulled it off barely. David gets a girl’s rock song… Black Horse and The Cherry Tree (which I always thought was country), Krystal drew a boy’s rap song – Funky Cold Medina, hilarious!

BJ drew a girl’s country song, so Tom gives him Jesus Take The Wheel. He gave up and quit before he got halfway through it. Later, I understood why as he unloaded with some thrash metal song full of F-bombs. Jesus wasn’t in his vocabulary.

Erica gets a girl’s pop song, so she was happy when Girls Just Wanna Have Fun came up. Tom said she had the best draw of the night. Jason also got a girl’s rock song and sang I’m The Only One as best he could with all the flair and personality he could muster. He got a great response from the audience.

And then, last but not least, Mr. Flex Wexler, who drew a boy’s parody song, entertained the group with Marijuanaville. Very funny. Flex Wexler is Ivar’s (that’s Ee-Var) alter ego on stage. He’s used to doing the silly stuff, so this song suited him perfectly. Ivar is an ex-radio DJ, even worked at KZOK for a time.

Tom gave away T-shirts, hats and tons of T-shirts, plus those beaded necklaces. Erica had about thirty of them around her neck. I can only guess what she had to do to earn those.

After the numbers were tallied, and Justin and Kansas the Bartender got to sing their duet, Tom announced the winners of the contest. In 3rd place; Krystal, in 2nd place; Flex, and in 1st place; Jason turned fifty bucks richer!

One Eyed Jacks is always promoting something or another. The entertainment schedule at OEJ’s is a full time, week long deal. Comedy, live music and Texas Hold ‘em on Saturdays, karaoke every Tuesday, Thursday, Friday, and Sunday with either Chachie, Tiger B., or Tom. Industry night is Sunday, another great time to party at One Eyed Jacks.

See their ad in this issue for all the gory details. And come see Tiger B. for his signature karaoke chaos at One Eyed Jacks Roadhouse, 14019 Hwy 99, Lynnwood, WA (425) 743-5570.
