Put Oscar’s on your radar

By Thomas Haley

Sometimes you find the best places when you least expect it.

Oscar’s is a swank restaurant located just south of 72nd and Hosmer in Tacoma, with an extensive menu to suit everybody’s desires. The bar provides a spacious atmosphere with lots of seating, an elegant ambience and dining experience coupled with live entertainment and karaoke.

Throughout the restaurant are beautiful Cocktailers and Servers whose number one job is to take care of you! The bar is very accommodating, with so many choices of liquor, they have to climb a ladder to get to it, like those old library ladders. The crowd at Oscar’s is lively, friendly, and really gets into the show. There’s nothing like a supportive crowd to get you all pumped up. They have a strong military following, and for good reason.

Oscar’s has been under the same ownership for many years, but recently decided to let loose and have some fun. Oscar himself, traveled around the world with the military and when he finally settled here in Washington, he decided to open his very own fine dining establishment. He created a menu based on the most delicious foods he sampled during his travels around the world.

After talking to some of the locals, I discovered that Oscar’s had become popular purely by word of mouth. Most of the people there are from McChord Air Force Base or Fort Lewis. McChord hosts continuing education classes, attracting hundreds of officers from all over the U.S. to Washington each year. Oscar’s has become their favorite bar.

Misty the KJ met me with her million-dollar smile, and quickly helped me choose a song to fit the demographic in the room. Although there’s a large selection of songs, Country seemed to be the focus at Oscar’s, popular with the military boys. And I forgot my cowboy hat!

Misty took the time to dial me in as I belted out a Garth Brooks tune. Suddenly, I noticed I was surrounded by all these cute high-ranking ladies. I felt like I was on the set of G.I. Jane.

Oscar’s is one of those places that you would never know about unless someone recommended it to you, but once you check it out, you will be coming back again, and again. So consider this your official recommendation, please.

Oscar’s features karaoke on every Friday and Saturday night, plus, throughout the week, they allow local artists to come in and show off their stuff. I showed up on a Tuesday and was happy to find a local artist playing his guitar, singing some awesome folk music. The crowd really seemed to enjoy it.

Whether it’s a memorable meal you’re looking for, or you just want to go out and cut a rug, stop in. Oscar’s will satisfy your needs.

Oscar’s Restaurant and Lounge; is located on 8736 S. Hosmer, Tacoma, WA (253) 548-2419.
