Thunderbird celebrates 20 years!
By Ty Hughes
It’s true, twenty years! The Thunderbird Lounge has been a staple in the Summit-Waller Community of Tacoma for the past 20 years solid. And that’s saying something, especially given the state of the Union these days! But if there ever was a location that will pack ‘em in when no one else is, it would be the Thunderbird. Set on an Indian reservation, they can still smoke in the building here, not only that, but there’s a full-on smoke shop attached to the bar!
What’s more incredible, is that Lonnie “Lonman” Boyer has been hosting karaoke at the Thunderbird almost since it’s inception that many years ago. Lonman’s reputation spreads well beyond the walls of the bar too. He is well-known and revered in many circles, karaoke-related or not.
As a young man, fresh out of high school, Lonnie studied to be a soundman for major bands and eventually started his own Karaoke/DJ business in Tacoma. His first gig was at the Thunderbird Lounge and they still operate out of here seven nights a week. He continued to play guitar for several bands until 2003, when a bout with carpal tunnel took him away from the stage for good.
Meanwhile, Lonman’s seven-night-a-week gig at the “Bird” as he calls it, is still going strong, to say the least. They pack this place out, all the time. Lonnie’s system sounds friggin’ awesome and he packs a massive library of music that will have your head spinning with options. Lonman’s show attracts Tacoma’s greatest singing talents, even more so today. And don’t be shocked when they get up and start dancing around the tables and on the dance floor. This is a fun karaoke show right here party people!
On Sunday, August 15, the “Bird” celebrated their big 20th Anniversary in style with karaoke and live music outside in the sweltering heat of the day, with cold beers flying out of the bar. By dusk, they took it inside and partied the night away with more karaoke and games.
Gannon and Alyssa operated the karaoke system under the tents, while our friends Les, Sheryl, Andrew, Rick, Kale, and others rocked the day away. Les did his signature 80’s rock stuff, which always brings back memories. Gloria is my new friend. She sang Pour Me real good, and then tells me she’s going to marry the doorman, Lance. They make a very cute couple and we wish them both the best.
Dart Coordinators, E.T. and Phil had the dart boards smoking all day with a busy tournament. Darts is a very popular feature of the Thunderbird as well, with many dedicated dart players that call the bar “home”.
Esther was reportedly cruising around the bar that day as well, but since so many folks opted for the air-conditioned interior rather than the outdoor patio, the place was crawling with activity everywhere and she couldn’t be found. Pretty standard for the Thunderbird though.
Stop in and check out Lonman’s show any night of the week, but I’ve got to warn you, you may never return to your regular karaoke spot after you’ve gotten a taste of this karaoke show. Just ask Les and Sheryl.
Thunderbird Lounge is located at 7121 Waller Rd. E, Tacoma (253) 539-1995.
